About Dallas
Attractions in Dallas
Ginger Man
The Ginger Man is a haven for beer-lovers set in a house with a great shady yard full of picnic tables out back and live music Saturday nights. There's also a beautiful upstairs lounge with its own balcony and bar stocked with an impressive range of international brews both on tap and in bottles.
Texas Discovery Gardens
Formerly known as the Dallas Horticulture Center, these indoor-outdoor gardens include a two-storey tropical conservatory, a fragrance garden, a butterfly garden, a native plant exhibit and much more besides.
Conspiracy Museum
Do you want more proof that Oswald didn't act alone? The Conspiracy Museum looks a bit like a student's history project, but raises enough questions to make you think. Across N Market St is the Kennedy Memorial, a simple but profound sculpture by architect Phillip Johnson.
Nasher Sculpture Center
Modern-art installations shine both outside and in at the fabulous glass-and-steel Nasher Sculpture Center and gardens.
Fair Park
Home to the state fair and Cotton Bowl stadium, Fair Park was created for the 1936 Texas Centennial Exposition. Today art-deco buildings contain seven museums, focusing on science, railroad history, African Americans, women's history… This is not in the best neighborhood, but they're trying to revitalize the place, and it's perfectly safe during the day.
S & D Oyster Company
Among Dallas restaurants, S&D Oyster Company holds a place of honour. In business since 1976, this casual Uptown seafood spot is a survivor in a city known for eating its young when it comes to new restaurants. Bare-bones decor means the focus is on really good seafood. Try the barbecue shrimp - if they don't run out before you get there.
Bread Winners Cafe & Bakery
Bread Winners is the perfect combination of upscale dining and casual friendly atmosphere. Whether you have the veggie melt for lunch, the tenderloin Eggs Benedict for brunch or nut-crusted fish for dinner, be sure to save room for cookies.
Old Monk
Irish, German and Belgian brews are served on tap here in a suitably dank, dark, smoky setting. The Old Monk is furnished with many antiques including lights from a monastery in Pennsylvania and a 100-year-old altar door.
Stoneleigh P
Stoneleigh P channels the spirit of its original building with black-and-white photographs of medicinal items stocking the antique pharmacy cabinets, Texas memorabilia and two working jukeboxes. As the sun goes down, this restaurant becomes more of a bar, serving 'drugstore drinks', beers and hard liquor at the converted soda counter.
Southfork Ranch
Southfork Ranch was the location of Dallas, one of television's longest-running dramas (it lasted 13 years). See the gun that shot JR, the 1978 Lincoln Continental that Jock drove and a little deli called Miss Elie's Place, where you can 'eat like the Ewings used to'.
Angry Dog
Workers crowd in at lunchtime for the unbeatable burgers.
